Yesterday we got more than what we bargained for as multiple NFL Players refuse to stand with their hand over their heart on 9/11 and disrespect our flag.
Yesterday we got a little more than what we bargained for as not only the Seahawks disrespect our flag. Yesterday was the 15th anniversary of the Terrorist Attacks committed on September 11th, 2001 and we are once again reminded that things are not the way they were. Multiple members on the Dolphins team and all members of the Seahawks refused to honor the American Flag at yesterdays game by not standing in their usual poses. Their reason behind all this was to "Stand united against segregation and inequality." Little did they know, they were missing the whole point of the National Anthem. The National Anthem represents not just America but the American people. Our National Anthem was created by a patriot during the Battle of Baltimore when they saw that the flag was still there. Our flag represents not only our rights, freedoms, and liberties given to us by our founding fathers, but it represents us united. To say that you stand united and not honor the flag is to be Anti-American, as the most united thing you can do is honor the flag that has brought us together for some many years. One nation under god, and E pluribus unum "Out of many one." If not for equality, freedom, and unity then what else does the flag stand for? The most patriotic, all-american and all united symbol there was. On September 11th Americans around the world were devastated, put in dismay and many felt dishonored. But it was not the ground they turned to kneel, it was the flag they then saluted to know that though hardships fall on each and every one of us, and though life is not fair, they knew in their hearts that they were born in the luckiest nation in the world and that every thing they had been able to do in their life up to this point is thanks to those who gave their lives defending this country. And so these men are definitely missing what the flag represents if they say dishonoring it is them "United". The very idea that anything is more patriotic than loving ones country and supporting ones flag is absurd. The flag is more than symbolic for some, it is a passion that all should want to envelope themselves in. And to say that you are a patriot and dishonor your country's flag brings shame to your name, and if you think that is the best way to "Unite" your country then maybe you need to experience what it is like outside. Experience what it is like outside the luckiest nation in the world. And even then you still could not know, the hardships and challenges that those outside our great nation face. The privileges and luxuries you have been provided just by being born in this great nation. The fact that you can even do such a thing to your own country's flag is one of the luxury's so many nations don't even get the right to experience. So at the end of the day you need to look in the mirror and ask, does this really unite us? Or does this only tear us apart?
